How to Plan a Business Website That Converts

Most website projects start in the wrong place: with design. Colors, fonts and photos matter, but they are easier to get right once you know what the site needs to accomplish. A little planning up front saves rounds of revisions later and leads to a website that actually brings in business.

Start with the goal of the website

Ask a simple question: what should a visitor do after landing on your site? For most service businesses the answer is to call, fill out a form or book an appointment. For a retailer it may be to buy a product. Write that goal down. Every page should help visitors move toward it.

Know who you are speaking to

List the two or three types of customers you most want to reach. For each one, note the questions they ask before they hire you. Those questions become your page structure and your content.

  • What exactly do you offer, and is it right for me?
  • Do you serve my area or industry?
  • How does the process work, and what does it cost?
  • Why should I trust you?

Plan the pages before the design

Sketch a simple sitemap. A typical small business site includes a homepage, an about page, a page for each main service, a contact page and supporting pages such as FAQs. Giving each important service its own page helps visitors find what they need and helps search engines understand what you do.

A clear structure does more for conversions than any design trend.

Make the next step obvious

Place a clear call to action near the top of each page and again at natural decision points. Keep forms short. Make phone numbers clickable on mobile. Small details like these remove friction for people who are ready to reach out.

Build in speed and accessibility from the start

Fast load times and accessible design are not extras. Compress images, avoid unnecessary plugins and use clear headings, readable text and good color contrast. These choices help every visitor, including people using assistive technology, and they support search performance.

Plan how you will measure success

Decide what you will track before launch: form submissions, calls from the website, bookings or sales. Set up analytics and conversion tracking so you can see what is working and improve over time.
